Recommended Resources
(thanks to various parents for their contribution to this list!)
The Great Debate, by Jonathan Wolfson - All new families will be required to purchase this book, and I highly recommend it to all other families (parents / students) who wants to learn more about debate.
"Source books". These are electronically delivered documents, giving you quality evidence you can print at home and use in a round. These are not just for novices! Highly accomplished debaters use source books, too. Both of these have already published one edition. For more information, please visit their website:
Quickstart (editors: Maria Silva & Isabella Chow) http://quickstartdebate.com/
tl;dr (editors: Madison Gates & Harrison Tang) http://tldrdebate.com/
CIA World Factbook. A recommended site for research: This will be helpful to make Fact Sheets for every country in the resolution, which includes the United States.
Khan Academy. This year, you will need to understand economic principles in debate. Khan Academy has excellent videos that can teach you in short segments of time (approx. 10 minutes per video). I suggest you start with the video that gives an introduction to economics. He also has a section on Foreign Exchange and Trade, one of the subsets ofMacroeconomics.
LexisNexis. This is an advanced research tool available to Stoa members after you register. It costs $30 through Stoa, which a significant discount. However, if you are taking classes at De Anza or Foothill college, you can access LexisNexis with your student ID number. De Anza students can access here. Foothill students can access here. Some students have found this research tool "clunky"; you may need help of more experienced debaters (or your parents) to navigate it.
Library of Economics and Liberty has an article that explains the trade concept of comparative advantage in a story ( Part I ) and goes on to explain why trade is so important to our lives (Part II.)
For those of you who plan to participate in Parli this year:
Our format for Parli will change. Mrs. Rehn will be having Parli meetings every week (5:30pm) starting Oct 1, and she will offer more formal training for Parli next year. Here is a resource (online PDF available HERE) that will be helpful for you to have.
Team Policy:
Some families have indicated that they would like more instruction on debate. Here are a few resources for both debaters and parents!
The Great Debate, from Amazon.com (suggested by Mrs. Rehn)
Code of the Debater by Alfed Snider, available online in pdf format. (suggested at the Stoa Academy)
